We Are Here on Earth to Fart Around

Kurt Vonnegut QuoteI tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around and don’t let anybody tell you different – Kurt Vonnegut

This morning I read that quote and it hit home.  We put so much pressure on ourselves to be what the world considers successful.  We forget to just enjoy life or as Kurt said “Fart around”.

We feel like we are lazy if work does not consume at least 40 hours a week, we are not bringing the kids to practices, functions, etc… and attending every family and friend event you get invited to.

We feel a small bit of guilt when we see others posting pictures of events, functions, etc… on social media.  If someone asks how you are doing, great and busy are the default answers.

What if you were able to answer great and restful?  Would you feel guilty saying you have been farting around or would you embrace it and hold the phrase as a badge of honor?

The French have a word “flaneur”, which means to idler or lounger.  What this really means is someone who is enjoying and taking in the world around them.

Give yourself permission to be a flaneur and to fart around.  Seriously, we do not need Facebook worthy weekends all the time.  Remember we only take pictures of the cool things that happened that day.

Of course if you are a friend of mine of Facebook, you know my ideal weekend is a very relaxing one hiking, kayaking (somewhere close by preferably), or just sitting around the house with family or friends.

We can learn a little something from our pets.  Below is Taz who was gracious enough to give us an example of how to be a flaneur.

In order to be a flaneur you should follow some simple rules:

  • Leave your cell phone off if you are out enjoying nature.
  • Take in all the sounds, smells, and sights.
  • Be happy and grateful for the extra day we get to enjoy on this wonderful planet.
  • Remember how lucky we are to have food, health, family, friends, shelter, and all the other amenities.

I wish I could find the old episode of the Dave Ramsey show now, but my wife and I listened to a whole show Dave dedicated to hearing people who became debt free.  Dave was surprised to hear so many people say one of the best side effects of becoming debt free was not having to work so much.

People embraced not being as busy, not working so hard, not needing to have so many commitments.  Over half the debt free callers expressed how happy they were to be able to scale back their work, take lesser paying (less stress) jobs and enjoy more family and personal time.

Don’t take my word for it, once you have the bills paid, food on the table and everything you need listen to Kurt.  Go ahead and fart around, you deserve it.

The next time someone asks you how you are doing, just say life is wonderful and I am only as busy as I need to be.  😉

Have a great week!
